CARGO logo
Communities Addressing Responsible Gun Ownership (CARGO) is an innovative approach to protecting our children from accidental and impulsive gun shot injuries. It is a collaboration of the Pima County Attorney's Office, medical personnel and law enforcement. The CARGO multi-disciplinary team educates participants about firearm safety and responsibility. During the program, a law enforcement officer provides information about safe gun storage, responsible parenting and safe gun handling. A doctor, nurse, or paramedic discusses the effects gun shot wounds have on victims and society, and a prosecutor highlights specific cases and laws involving firearms. Free gun locks are available at CARGO presentations. We encourage families, guardians, youths, teachers, coaches, gun owners, non-gun owners and caregivers to attend presentations. The program is open to the public and is free of charge.

To schedule a free CARGO presentation for your group, school, or workplace, contact the CARGO Program at 740-5600.

If you own a gun and children are ever in your home, please consider:

  • Locking your gun and ammunition and storing them separately in a safe or with a gun lock.
  • Learning about the risks posed by keeping a gun a home.

Whether you own a gun or do not own a gun:

  • Before your child visits another’s home (relative or friend), ask the parents if there are guns in the home.
    • Ask how the firearms are secured (gun safe, trigger lock, universal lock, cable lock).
    • Ask how and where the ammunition is stored.
  • Answer your children’s questions about firearms openly and honestly.
  • Talk to your children about guns and make sure they know the dangers of guns.
  • Keep guns away from children and teach them that guns are not toys.

Safe Gun Handling:

  • Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
  • Always point the gun in a safe direction.
  • Keep your gun unloaded until ready to shoot.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  • Know what is behind your target.

“ CARGO does not endorse gun control or gun ownership, but deals with the reality that a firearm is a deadly weapon capable of causing serious injury or death.”
