Monthly Spotlight: Juvenile

Violence among America’s young people remains at historically high levels, and both offenders and victims are getting younger each year. Youth are the most frequent victims of violence nationwide, with teenagers at least twice as likely as adults to become the victims of some sort of physical assault. Every day, 13 children under the age of 20 are murdered. Although there has been a 30% decline in juvenile homicides since 1994, homicide accounts for 20% of all deaths of the 10-24 age group and is one of the leading causes of death for this group.

The Criminal Division consists of 60 attorneys and 190 staff members in a variety of roles to support the prosecution efforts of the office. The Criminal Division is divided into 13 prosecution units, a team of detectives and an administrative operation. Each of the prosecution units consist of prosecutors, legal assistants, legal secretaries and clerical staff who typically handle cases such as murder, assault, armed robbery, drug sales, burglary, theft, kidnapping and rape. But prosecution doesn't tell the full story about the Criminal Division. It has also established an Adult Diversion Program to help rehabilitate first time, low level offenders, and a Bad Check Program to help merchants and individuals address the issue of bad check writers.
