The Pima County Attorney's Office represents you, the people, in
the criminal justice system in Arizona. Our mission is to serve
the public by protecting the personal rights of the people
of Pima County to life, liberty and security by holding criminals
accountable for unlawful violations of those rights.
We serve the public by carrying out our statutory duties
to provide legal services and related functions in a manner
that reflects a commitment to excellence and consciousness
of the public trust that has been bestowed upon us.
We
are the advocates for the state and for the people of
Pima County. To perform this function effectively, we
have three primary obligations:
- To
reduce crime and protect the public safety by holding
criminals accountable for their conduct
- To
assist victims and witnesses by treating them with
compassion and respect and vigorously upholding their
rights
and minimizing the inconvenience and hardship associated
with the crime.
By
working proactively with the community, to reduce crime
and protect residents, and to prevent children from becoming
criminals in the first place.
Accomplishing our mission requires a sizeable, diverse and very
hard-working group of employees. Our prosecutors handle both criminal
and civil cases. The 60 criminal attorneys handle about 5,200 cases
a year. Since 1992, they have taken a higher percentage of felony
cases to trial than any other County Attorney's Office in the state.
We obtain convictions in eight out of 10 of these cases.
The Office also represents Pima County in civil cases.
Our 20 attorneys save residents millions of dollars defending
the county against lawsuits, making collections in bankruptcy
court, litigating tax cases, and assessing fines and penalties
in environmental cases.
In addition, the Office has developed programs that divert
non-violent, first-time offenders into rehabilitation programs,
collect restitution for victims and provide assistance
for victims and witnesses of crimes. Finally, through a
variety of initiatives -- ranging from truancy awareness
to school violence prevention programs -- we work to keep
crimes from occurring.
