Special Victims Unit Overview

The caseload of the Special Victims Unit of the Pima County Attorney's Office is composed of several assignments: to prosecute persons charged with crimes against children, sexual crimes and felony domestic violence.

The assignments are similar in that they deal with a person who has suffered a very frightening and personal attack, often life threatening, and frequently by someone they know and trust.

Victims and witnesses are often very young children, women, elderly, or highly traumatized, and must be approached by prosecutors specially trained to deal with these specific types of crime.

Every 15 seconds a woman is battered. Two to four million women are abused each year and 4,000 of them die. Every 45 seconds someone in the United States is sexually assaulted.

Domestic violence is a problem of epidemic proportions in our country and community. Nearly one-third of American women (31 percent) report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives, according to a 1998 Commonwealth Fund survey.

This crime has remained hidden too long. We aggressively prosecute those who attack their families verbally or physically and provide referrals to appropriate social agencies for further help
