Sentencing on two high-profile cases and more.

#WeekInJustice: Week 178

The theme this week is double the Info:

In our Criminal Division:

  • Sentencing was held on two high-profile cases:
    • Murad Dervish: this statement was released to the media.
    • The other case involved a mother from Mexico who visited the site where her daughter lost her life. She was able to pray at the site and lay roses in honor of her child. Details on the case can be seen here.

In our Civil Division:

  • We held emergency meetings regarding the AZ Legislature sweeping away Opioid funding.
  • We held emergency meeting regarding the AZ Legislature sweeping away Law Enforcement AARF (RICO) funding.
  • We continue to explore our litigation options.

In Administration:

  • I ran up Mt. Lemmon to join our incredible and fully staffed Victim Services Division on their much needed and deserved mental health break from their tough work.
  • I attended the Passing of the Gavel to mark the new administration of Chief Justice Ann Timmer who will preside over the AZ Supreme Court for the next 5 years.
  • And I hosted an absolutely fascinating group of lawyers from the Congressional Office of International Leadership. The inspiring group worked as Human Rights and Special Victims Lawyers from Kosovo, Macedonia, and Serbia, and by the end of our meeting I was in absolute awe.  I think they were supposed to be learning about our system, but their very presence was truly powerful.
