Reminding us all how vast and beautiful the County is.

#WeekInJustice: Week 199

Reminding us all how vast and beautiful the County is, we took our twice-a-year Western Pima County swing again this past week.  It looks like this:

  • Visiting Sells, where we *listen,* meet, collaborate, and report requested data to our Tohono O’odham partners, meeting with:
  • The T.O. Attorney General’s Office with Attorney General Howard Shanker and Deputies Hue Le and Marissa Sites,
  • Chief Nicol Green, a long-time former PCAO prosecutor who is now the Chief Criminal Prosecutor for the Nation,
  • Chairman Verlon Jose and Vice Chairwoman Carla Johnson,

And April Ignacio, co-founder of Indivisible Tohono)

  • Traveling further on to Ajo, Arizona, where yes, we have our own Pima County courthouse and PCAO prosecutor and beloved staff who help to provide service to a very special town, meeting with:
  • Long-time Lieutenant Jeremy Olsen of PCSD,
  • Justice of the Peace Sara Mae Williams and Court Administrator Maria Klucarova,
  • Aaron Cooper of the International Sonoran Desert Alliance,
  • And all of the Western Pima County Community Council provided a tough, earnest, and sincere crowd of some 80 residents with excellent questions.

Our service to Nation member victims and our handling of Nation defendants remains a top equitable concern and ensuring rural Pima County has equitable access to justice is never out of mind.

And lastly, we ate and communed and heard stories quite well in Sells, Ajo, and Why, reminding us, again, how vast and beautiful and diverse and brilliant the people and the land are that comprise the Sonoran Desert and Pima County.

To be continued, Laura
