PCAO is working towards a better tomorrow for Pima County.

#WeekInJustice: Week 203

This morning, The League of Women Voters hosted an issue-based breakfast with nearly 350 people in the room. I joined a panel along with Anna Harper Guerrero, the Executive Director of Emerge, Tucson Police Chief Chad Kasmar, and the Interim Director of Sister Jose Women’s Shelter, Diana Sheldon. We collectively answered some key questions that the community wanted answers to.

The issue discussed was domestic violence, and while we were able to share this chart attached and attempt to undo an avalanche of misinformation about domestic violence last year by producing actual data, we were more importantly there to highlight that while most areas of violent crime have come back down after COVID, domestic violence has maintained its unacceptable peak.

What I said to that room bears repeating now. If there ever was a time when we all needed to join in together and be unified, God knows that moment has arrived now.  We remain buried in the high volume of cases with limited but exceptional staff, and yet we must somehow simply do more.  We need to be leaders, unifiers, and messengers, and we need to be the best partners we can be to law enforcement and service providers.

We need to do a little better tomorrow than we did today, and every day for the next 4 years.

To be continued,
