#WeekInJustice: Week 213
I couldn’t find a moment last Friday to put pen to paper, so this is one of those bonus Weeklies x 2.
Last Friday, the Board of Supervisors directed us to file suit against the Department of Homeland Security to recoup 12 million dollars in taxpayer money that they simply stopped paying. The concept is not complicated, but the stress was. Once again, a huge shout-out to the cutting-edge work of our Civil Division.

Over in our Criminal and Appeals Divisions, we continue with our jury streak and Court of Appeals wins, most especially in the special victims and violent crime arenas. Our DV Unit continues to hold the line on violent behavior, even when the whole system feels like it’s against us. There really is no other area of criminal law where every single possible player ends up newly aligned against our prosecutors by the time of trial. This is both noble and *rough* work.
We are also currently in grant season and celebrating our blossoming Restorative Justice Unit and planning for the future.
And finally, we bid adieu to our first set of San Miguel student workers (who were all freshmen by the way), all eight of them! With special days of Comms experiences, working on projects in various departments, a Q&A with Senior Leadership, and of course, a pizza party. We want to thank Angel, Fernanda, Marely, Karla, Jace, and Jessica for their hard work over the past year. The future looks bright!

To be continued,
Laura
