#WeekInJustice: Week 241
Community Safety Starts with Community Connection!
While the 88-CRIME team is always hard at work on their mission, they recently took a “paws” to join local law enforcement and first responders for a truly special event: Tucson Night to Shine!
Night to Shine is an incredible, drug- and alcohol-free celebration that honors and values our neighbors with special needs. We had a blast celebrating this amazing community! Their team—and special guest, McGruff the Crime Dog—loved meeting everyone and sharing the message that crime prevention is an important part of keeping our Tucson community safe and inclusive for all.

PCAO, 88-Crime Continue Love of Reading Support
Love is in the air—Love of Reading that is, and it’s one of our favorite times of year!
Led by 88-Crime Program Coordinator James Allerton and joined by volunteers, PCAO Legal Secretary Isabel Campos, Legal Processing Support Specialist Annie Lee, and Jeanette Clayborne, participated in Love of Reading Week at Miller Elementary School Feb. 16. The 88-Crime team is a strong believer in the power of literacy as a crime-prevention tool. Helping kids succeed in school builds a foundation for a safer, stronger community.

The PCAO and 88-Crime team also visited Miller Elementary School Feb. 18.
PCAO Chief of Detectives Fabian Pacheco, 88-Crime Coordinator James Allerton and PCAO Communications Specialist Kelvin Ringold read some of the school’s favorite books to five classes.
The team also answered questions, handed out prizes and helped entertain the students with cheerful songs as book passages were read.

In the last Love of Reading Month celebration of the week, Laura Conover, the Pima County Attorney, spent time with students at Ocotillo Learning Center Feb. 19.
A community tradition for over a decade, Love of Reading Month allows the PCAO and other organizations to help give back to the community by celebrating the importance of reading with students and faculty.

Getting the 88-Crime Message Out
James Allerton, the 88-Crime Program Coordinator, visited the Common Good Radio Show with Pastor Jon McLane Feb. 18.
The interview gave Allerton the opportunity to introduce himself to the community and provide background on the 88-Crime program and its importance to the community.
Tune in Sunday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. on radio channel 1030 AM, The Voice, to find out more about the 88-Crime program from Allerton himself.

PCAO Recruiting Efforts
The PCAO team is always looking to recruit tomorrow’s talent today. With the University of Arizona graduation season ahead, PCAO Legal Office Support Managers Jillian Khattab, Christi Padilla and Paralegal Supervisor Chloe Boyle attended the Pima County Career Fair Feb. 20 at the Kino Event Center.
Explaining “What We Do” at the People’s Office to current and future professionals helps our talent acquisition team engage with community members. But also informs top talent why the PCAO is the perfect place to start or continue their careers.

Speaking of tomorrow’s talent, in a special episode of the People’s Office Podcast, CA Conover spoke with James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona students for a unique conversation. This time, the students flipped the script and interviewed Laura to discuss why she chose to become Pima County Attorney, the critical work being done at PCAO and the complexities of leading a public law office.

PCAO Remembers Champion for Justice
The PCAO is guided by core values that were evident throughout Rev. Jesse Jackson’s life’s work. As one of the most prominent U.S. civil rights leaders since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he demonstrated integrity, courage, respect, empathy, diversity, and accountability during a transformative era in our nation’s history, work that continues today.
His enduring message, “I am somebody,” reminds us of the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, especially those at risk of being overlooked or unheard.
