Justice in the Community
Thank you to the team of Pima County Attorney Tai Summers, Paralegal Laurie Robinson, Legal Secretary Cameron Lawson, Victim Advocate Hailey Evans, Trial Support Services Andrew Glaser and Peter Gonzales and Tucson Police Department Detectives Steven Hanes and Kami Hoffman for their successful prosecution in the case of State v. David Samaniego Manuel Sr. and David Samaniego Jr.
On May 7, after a jury trial, Defendant Sr., was sentenced to 17 years in prison for kidnapping, 20 years for involving or using a minor in a drug offense, and 20 years for sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 15 as an accomplice. The sentences will be served consecutively, with credit for 574 days already served.
On March 9, 2026, Defendant Jr. was sentenced pursuant to a plea agreement to 21.5 years in prison, to be followed by lifetime sex offender probation.
Cases like these remind us of the trauma that stays with survivors of crime every day, and the dedicated professionals who stand with them in the pursuit of justice. We hope these convictions and sentences give the survivors and community time to heal and the comfort knowing these defendants will never again be able to harm another child.
Red Dress Day Press Conference

In partnership with local tribal leaders, County Attorney Conover held a press conference May 5 in support of Red Dress Day and raising awareness of unresolved Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons.
Arizona consistently ranks third nationwide for missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP) cases, with hundreds of unsolved cases, disproportionately affecting Indigenous women and girls.

88-Crime joined law enforcement in remembering fallen law enforcement May 4 and May 7.
On May 4, 88-Crime Program Coordinator James Allerton and his team had a somber but beautiful evening at the Arizona Peace Officers Memorial.
On May 7, 88-Crime joined the Pima County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies from across the state to pay our respects to the fallen at the Pima County Courthouse.
Our hearts are heavy as we remember Officer Gabriel Facio (Apache Junction PD). Seeing his name added to the memorial wall serves as a powerful reminder of the debt we owe to those who protect us every day. We remember their service, their bravery, and the families they left behind.
May we never forget those who gave everything to keep our community safe.
Public Service Recognition Week
The People’s Office joined other Pima County employees during the Public Service Recognition Week event May 5.
Public Service Recognition Week honors federal, state, county, local and tribal government employees who serve the public. Established in 1985, this annual campaign occurs the first full week of May to highlight the contributions of public servants.
