#JusticeinPimaCounty: Week 59
After clerking for a year with the Montana Supreme Court, Myles Braccio started his career as a prosecutor in 2010 at the Attorney General’s Office in Phoenix as a young, fresh-faced, passionate attorney ready to take on the world. Myles learned from and worked with some of the greatest legal minds in the state of Arizona from Terry Goddard to Paul Ahler, Don Conrad, and current Arizona Supreme Court Justices John Lopez and James Beene. Myles was really establishing a reputation as a leading voice for appellate writing and advocacy, and those of us in our senior leadership team still chuckle with delight and surprise that Myles found us and became our Appellate Chief, moving his life to Tucson and helping us grow our appeals unit. What fortune for us! During his career, Myles had the opportunity to argue before numerous Federal and State appellate courts, including at least 5 times before the Arizona Supreme Court. But, in the Arizona Supreme Court’s project to enhance accessibility and visibility state-wide, his first two arguments took place in high school gymnasiums. (Pictured here, photo credit to his lovely partner Jessica.)
Last week, Myles again had the chance to move his brilliant oral argument skills from local high school gymnasiums into the real, hallowed halls of the Arizona Supreme Court. With the extraordinary help of rising star Maile Belongie and the estimable Jack Chin, Myles took on an issue of state-wide importance with integrity, professionalism, and in the spirit of conflict resolution. Before the Court “gaveled in,” I was allowed to take that second picture sitting right behind Myles and Maile.
It’s moments like these that make clear the future of PCAO continues to shine so brightly.
To be continued,
Laura
