After a record breaking 50 applicants, the Pima County Attorney’s Office welcomed 16 law clerks, and they jumped in to a packed first week of court experiences, training, and getting settled in and meeting attorneys.

#JusticeinPimaCounty: Week 73

We were joined by a supportive group of out-going clerks, who helped organize and train our newest group. Fortunately for us, most of those outgoing clerks aren’t going far – just upstairs! They will be back at the People’s Office right after they pass their bar exams.

This is an example of the dedication and hard work that happens every day in our Office, supporting our mission and serving the citizens of Pima County.

And they are excellent public servants, also helping with numerous trainings sessions. (Shout-outs to Kelley McDonald, Alison Wheeler, Sam and Thomas Rapp, and Thomas New!)

And a huge props go to Rozana Villanes, who has been nothing short of amazing! She rearranged the entire 14th floor clerk room, resupplied it, managed all the administrative work and got our new clerks settled, and ready for their summer experience.

Our new clerks wouldn’t have had any of this training or their summer teed up without her.

And the clerks are so excited for this experience. I dare say we’ll have more than 100 applications next year based on the fun this group is about to have.

Times being what they are, we had a COVID wrinkle that interrupted our Tuesday night soiree, forcing us to go remote and postpone a planned writing exercise the next day that would prepare them for handling assignments and assisting with cases.

Well, that didn’t stop this group.

They were already picking up writing assignments and jumping on cases from the get-go, providing juvenile transfer responses, modifying conditions for violent offenders (thank you Lacee Collins!), and even taking on high-level appellate briefings and projects involving major felonies.

Watch out, this new group already is making some noise!

We owe gratitude to every lawyer in our building for contributing to this successful start of so many law careers. When court tours got cancelled for Wednesday, numerous attorneys in our Criminal Division reached out and agreed to take them over for morning coverage (Jeff Amlee, Maribel Goodman, Joseph Ricks, Sara Wright, and Lacee!).

The total team effort has been nothing short of inspirational.

This is an organization full of incredibly dedicated lawyers.
