With February marking Black History Month, PCAO celebrated the ever-growing cultural diversity of the office, including a visit in late January by Craig Sims, a former prosecutor in Seattle who has committed his professional focus on supporting efforts to recruit and retain more Black prosecuting attorneys in offices like ours nationwide.
We plan to continue working with Craig on this important equity issue to further ensure that The People’s Office is reflective of all the communities we serve.
We also opened our social media platforms to the stories of Pima County residents who shared what this month of cultural celebration means to them. We appreciate Desiree Cook, founder and CEO of I Am You 360, and retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Vincent Howard for sharing their stories and heartfelt feelings with us.
We love books, and we know that literacy leads to a more informed and capable society, which creates healthier, safer communities. So, Laura and Attorney Brad Roach, who leads the Conviction & Sentencing Integrity Unit, took their joy for reading to Grijalva Elementary School during Love of Reading Month to share that passion with students and support the noble efforts of their teachers.
We appreciate Grijalva Elementary and Principal Megan Chavez opening their classrooms to us and hope we made a positive impression for a skill that makes all the difference.
In early February, we began accepting nominations from the community for our second Pima County Attorney’s Office Community Safety Awards. We launched this annual recognition event to highlight everyday people who go above and beyond to help their neighbors be safer and healthier.
Last year, the inaugural event honored five people who found meaningful ways to make a difference. We know there are many more who take pride in their communities and take action to make them better. We’ll celebrate the recipients on April 4.
Laura had the honor of being the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Tucson’s Weekly Meeting at the Tucson Convention Center.
Before a house full of Rotarians, she shared information about PCAO’s annual report to the people of Pima County – the Year Two Review – and fielded questions from the audience.
One of our favorite ways to make neighborhoods safer is to put on our Saturday grubs and get out to pick up trash. Some of our crew and their partners joined the residents of the Julia Keen Neighborhood on Saturday, Feb. 18 to spruce up Parkview Park in that midtown neighborhood.
By helping clean up parks, schools, local streets, and other public areas, we build relationships and often introduce neighbors to one another, fostering connections that make Pima County safer one neighborhood at a time.
