Promotions, retirements, and difficult, but necessary meetings.

#WeekInJustice: Week 167

This week marked a couple of significant milestones.   Our own Vicki Otto was elevated to Supervisor of the Domestic Violence Unit after recent years of successful Special Victims and Cold Case sexual assault work. Vicki is a 20-year veteran, and we are pleased to have her expertise in such a demanding role.

And, after 19 years here at PCAO and another 16 years on the bench, Judge Teresa Godoy led her last morning calendar of hearings in Superior Court.  Congratulations Judge, and may retirement be good to you.

Lastly, I must take a serious moment.

When I arrived here, I made a promise at the People’s Office: if you had lost a loved one in a criminal incident, I would meet personally if a family so chose. I have kept that promise, and because of the backlog and the record number of homicides until the recent decline, I have had far too many of these meetings.  Just one mother’s grief is enough to bring you to your knees, but today I had two…  These are hard days, but these meetings keep me grounded and informed and extraordinarily proud of the work of our prosecutors and our victim advocates.

To be continued,

Laura
