Raising Awareness for Gun Violence Awareness Month.

#WeekInJustice: Week 126

First, we wanted to give many thanks to everyone who wore their orange fashions for a staff photo this morning to mark “Wear Orange Day”. It’s all in recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month, our Board of Supervisors also made a proclamation about the day at a meeting last month.

As part of our efforts to raise awareness, we joined forces with Banner University Hospital, The City of Tucson, Tucson Police, and the Pima County Health Department to produce a collaborative PSA on the issue, be sure to check out the link.  We also created our own gun lock PSA and mentioned the number of gun locks given out in 2022, that video is posted in the monthly newsletter that I released yesterday.  We’re planning to post about the initiative throughout the month on social media to keep it going. BTW, if you haven’t already, be sure to sign up for the newsletter and share it with your family and friends.

Moms Demand Action is holding a vigil for gun violence victims tomorrow night at 6 PM at the Southside Presbyterian Church at 317 W. 23rd Street. Laura, Sofia, Belen, and CT will be there with a resource table to hand out gun locks. Hopefully, you can stop by, wear orange, and join us at this important event.

Juneteenth is right around the corner and there are plenty of events planned and sponsored by the Tucson Juneteenth Committee this year. On Saturday, June 17th at Kino Sports Complex from 1 to 9PM, we’re planning to host a resource table at the Celebrate Freedom Juneteenth event until 6PM. There will be plenty of family-friendly activities including bounce houses, a classic car show, vendors, music, dancing, prizes, food trucks and…a grand finale! So even if you don’t volunteer, please come out and enjoy the day.

If you would like to volunteer at our table, be sure to contact Sofia for more details. If you want to volunteer for Juneteenth in general, use this link to check out the opportunities.

Thank you all for everything you do!

Have a WONDERFUL weekend.

Be well,

Shawndrea
